25 years ago, when it was decided to build the new General hospital in Redditch, the “Friends” of Smallwood Hospital decided to form the “League of Friends” at the new Alexandra Hospital.
The Hospital Co-ordinator, Mr Budgen, invited them to see the new construction and they clambered over the building site planning the “League of Friends” and and giving tours of the Hospital to local residents before the Hospital opened.
Then following a meeting held on a Thursday evening in a room in the Ecumenical Centre, and with the help of Mr. Budgen, John Corbetts, Frank Godfrey and others within 2 weeks they formed a committee and written the “League of Friends” constitution.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
Since then the League of Friends has raised millions of pounds to support the hospital, its staff and of course the patients. So this years, 2011, celebrations are being held to commemorate the last 25 years.
Volunteers are being invited to a special lunch so watch out for your invitation.
